A large number of data sets have been prepared for use with the
text. Click here to access the full
list of data sets with their titles. To access the individual
dataset, click on the title.
Two summary tables are also listed to help guide the users in terms
of scope and application of each dataset:
A. Comparative details of data sets
This table shows the structure and nature of each dataset classified
as follows:
- primary/secondary data
- time series/cross-sectional data
- categorical data
- size (number of observations, rows, columns)
- contingency table
Download a copy of
the table in Excel. This will open a new browser window. Click
File and then choose Save as. This table will not include the hyperlinks
to the datasets.
B. Potential Uses of Datasets
These tables provide a guide to the potential uses of each dataset
with respect to each of the topics covered, chapter by chapter,
within Principles of Applied Statistics.
Part 1 Descriptive statistics
Part 2 Probability and probability distributions
Part 3 Statistical inference
Part 4 Relationships between variables
Part 5 Time series and index numbers
It should be noted that these tables provide only a general guide
- users are likely to identify many additional areas of application
based on first-hand experience. Furthermore, it will be seen that
a few topics do not readily lend themselves to the use of datasets
as such.
Download a copy of
the table in Excel. This will open a new browser window. Click
File and then choose Save as. This table will include all the sections
and will not include the hyperlinks to the datasets.
We would be pleased to receive feedback
from users with respect to the usefulness and appropriateness of
these data sets as aids to learning and any suggestions for improvement
and extension.
